Our list of Frequently Asked Questions has grown too long to
be easily read in this format. To make it easier to find the
questions and answers you're looking for, we've split them into
the following categories:
1. Why would the Insert Image sub-program
from MS Word override the Insert Image subprogram from MS Works?
Can this problem be fixed without having to reload any software?
2. I received a Word document with a picture
embedded and I want to remove the picture into .jpg format to
send to someone that doesn’t have Word.
3. How can I un-install Word?.
4. What is Find Fast?
5. 1. Is there a way to have a timers on your
computer - something that would set off an alarm to remind you
to do something else?
6. In Outlook 2000, how do you change profiles
without closing and reopening Outlook? How do you transfer the
contents of the address book?
7. Is Microsoft Word97 part of Windows 98?
8. When I make a chart in Excel and put a
note on the chart, the note disappears.
9. My older computer came with MS Works installed.
My new one doesn’t but has Office 2000 instead and can’t
read the older .wps files from Works.
10. The computer locks up when anything is
plugged into the USB port.
11. All of my Word files have the icon of
text files now and open in Notepad instead of Word
12. I haveXP on my computer and I installed
Office v.43 to get checking in Outlook.
13. How do I keep files from changing to
Acrobat on my CD-ROM?
14.Can DOS program be run on XP?
1. This is an issue of two Microsoft programs
that are not talking to each other. By rights this should not
happen. The problem with these two programs, is that they are
not directly compatible with each other. If you have an MS Works
document or spreadsheet, it can not be directly read with the
other program. Your best bet would be to not use MS Works if
you want all the full features of this program. If you do not
care, and have no interest in using all the features, the MS
Works would work. Please remember that MS Works does not have
all the features and bells and whistles that the Office 97 or
Office 2000 programs have.
2. You need a program that will save graphics
in the .jpg format. You can then cut and paste the picture from
Word into that other program to save it in .jpg format. If you
don’t have a program like that look in www.tucows.com
or www.shareware.com
3. Word, and any other Microsoft Office product,
requires the CD that it was installed from to be uninstalled.
You can access the uninstall option, either from setup on the
CD or from Add/Remove programs in the Control panel.
4. That is one option that I uninstall at the
earliest opportunity on every computer I work on. Find Fast
was installed by default on all version of Microsoft Office
prior to Office 2000. It was a utility to index the hard drive
to make it faster to find files. It didn't work well and slowed
down the computer every time it ran. I have seen lots of stability
problems fixed by removing Find Fast.
Remove Find Fast Start Menu --> Settings --> Taskbar -->
Start Menu -->Advanced. Drill down under Programs to Startup
and delete Find Fast there and reboot.
5. Outlook(not Outlook Express) contains such
in their calendar and task functions. Outlook is included in
any Microsoft Office suite set. Also a
quick search at http://www.shareware.com,
I found a couple of free programs there that can do the same
thing.
6. You have to close Outlook to change profiles.
That's just the way it works. Outlook Express does something
similar with Identities, same thing. To transfer address books,
I have found that because of version problems, it always works
to export the address book to an "other addressbook"
using text/comma separated values format. And then import the
addresses as an "other addressbook." Using the 'native'
addressbook formats in Outlook and Outlook Express, there are
version problems between them. Also only addresses are transferred;
groups are not exported or imported.
7. Word is part of Microsoft’s office
suite and not the base OS. Notepad and WordPad are included
with Windows.
8. Without knowing the exact version of Excel
and whether you have installed any service releases, it’s
hard to speculate on this one. I glanced in the support area
on Microsoft’s website, and they have many close matches
to this problem. Many are fixed by upgrading from the 97 to
the 2000 version, and some are fixed with service release patches
available from Microsoft. And some of the mentioned fixes have
workarounds provided.
9. Microsoft makes available via download the
Works converters.
10. You may have a defective USB port on the
computer or a defective device. The USB port on the computer
may be physically defective or the drivers for it are bad. Go
to the manufacturer website and try to find new drivers.
See:

11. The association between .doc and Word
changed to Notepad. How you do this varies with each version
of Windows. In XP go to the Control Panel and switch to Classic
Mode. And double click on Folder Options. Click on the Files
Types tab and you can look up DOC and change it's association
there.
12. Office v.43 was written before Win95 and
was designed for Win 3.1. It won't interact with Outlook XP
properly. so to get spell checking in Outlook you will need
to get a newer version of Office.
13.The type icon is primarily cross-referenced
by the file name extension. So any file that ends in .pdf will
appear with an Acrobat icon in explorer and if you double click
on the file name, Windows will try to view it via Acrobat. The
behavior can be changed by changing the file type association
in explorer.
14. Sometimes. Microsoft is getting away from
DOS compatibilty. primarily if you have older DOS games that
tried to communicate directly to the hardware , they are guaranteed
to break.
