1. GoldMine is a Schedule Program. This is
usually used for contact management, and it can track whom you
have called and what was said to the person you have contacted.
You can run reports, but I am not sure of the extent of the
reports you can receive.
2. You may need to uninstall Print Shop and
then re-install the program. I do now know of any reason why
this should happen.
3. Try http://www.tucows.com or
http://shareware.com for fax software. Also, almost every modem
made comes with a basic fax program. You can also use the software
that comes with your scanner to acquire an image and then cut
& paste that image into a fax document to fax out. Otherwise,
an excellent commercial program is WinFax Pro.
4. If you lose the memo line (when looking
at the checkbook register) in Quicken Deluxe, v6, while the
register is open, there is a check box for line 2 display. Put
a check mark in that box.
5. That's a feature of a poorly written program.
This program is asking for memory and not giving it back when
done with it and just keeps asking for more until all the computer's
memory is allocated to this program. Quitting the program doesn't
help since the program doesn't tell Windows to release the memory.
This is called a memory leak. The only solution is to get an
updated program that doesn't have this bug, restart Windows
when needed or get a different program that doesn't have a memory
leak.
6. The default location in PhotoDeluxe for
'Save As' is on the A drive, so it is trying to read the floppy
when you select that option. I am not familiar with PhotoDeluxe,
but try to find in tools or setup where default file locations
are stored and see if you can change the default to something
other than the A drive.
7. GOBACK saves a copy of the current system
configuration on the hard drive. This is good for when you install
a program that breaks Windows. Bad for when your hard drive
quits working. Ghost makes a complete copy of the hard drive
contents on something other than the hard drive itself, for
instance: a Zip drive, Jaz drive, CD-RW drive. Then if the hard
drive quits working, you can put a new hard drive in and use
the Ghost image to replace the contents of your hard drive on
the new one.
8. Go to www.acrobat.com and download and reinstall
5. There were problems with an early version of Acrobat Reader
5.0.
9. Get Hypersnap. http://www.hyperionics.com/
10. GoBack is a system archival system. It
saves the state of the system and not the entire contents of
the hard drive and it saves it on the same hard drive. If you
get a virus, it’s always possible for the virus damage
the GoBack files. Also GoBack does not help in case of a hard
drive failure.
11. It’s possible to move applications
with programs like that if they are compatible with the new
operating system. Intellimover and the others look for linked
system files and registry entries and make a valiant effort
to move your old applications. And in many cases, it does successfully
move your programs. However, there is a lot of software that
worked under Win9x that won’t run under Win2K or WinXP.
It’s not possible to move those programs at all. Those
programs will never work under Win2K or WinXP. Games are the
most problematic in this regard. In DOS, Win9x, the programs
were allowed to touch the hardware directly and they did for
speed reasons. Under WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, there is a software
layer called the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) that prevents
the programs to directly touch the hardware. This causes many
older games to not work under WinNT, 2K or XP.
12. Yes, there are programs that can capture
keystrokes and what programs and such are run on your computer.
The FBI took a lead in the development of this type of software.
13. It’s hard to stop downloads of a
lot of the spyware and to stop saving cookies is more of a pain
than it’s worth. The use of a spyware remover like Adaware
or Pestpatrol is recommended. Search on spyware at http://www.shareware.com
for more choices in removal software. What do they do with the
information? Mostly it’s used for internal company marketing
or sold as demographic information to other companies.
14. DCIMAN32.DLL is a file from the original
install of Windows. You have to replace the file on your hard
drive. The procedure to do that varies with the version of Windows
involved. You need to look up the proper procedure to replace
that file from the install CD.
15. Either the software drivers for the sound
card are broken or there is a system resource conflict (you
add a card or changed a BIOS setting )and the analog to digital
converter is not working anymore.
16. You can't from there. You have to go into
the word processor to print labels now.
17. They were probably saved as templates
instead of documents. Open them and re-save them making sure
you re-save them as documents instead of templates.
18. Yes,but there are limitations. They have
a program called Ghost Explorer that does that, but be sure
to read the documentation on Ghost Explorer. It may not work
depending on how you created the images.
19. C-Dilla is actually a third party program
for licensing software. It enforces the licensing rules for
a program. It has been known to be very buggy recently. Yes,
the remover from Intuit should work. I would doubt a spyware
remover would be more effective. Just be sure to save paper
copies of your tax returns first!
20. The Hot fixes are just that, special fixes
that Microsoft has created to resolve problems that have cropped
up in the operating system. Many are security issues while others
are just to fix some minor bug in the operating system. You
should not remove them and just so that you don't accidentally
remove them, when you start the "Add or Remove Programs"
utility, there is a check box at the top of the window that
is listed as "Show updates". If this is checked you
will see the fixes and if it is not you will not see the fixes.
My suggestion is to uncheck this box.
21. You could use both, but for different
reasons. Ghost will make an image copy of your hard disk so
if you do lose the drive, it can be restored to the state when
the image was made. One needs to follow the instructions very
carefully with Ghost as you also need either a bootable CD or
a bootable diskette with the application on it, especially if
you lose your primary partition/drive. Backup, on the other
hand, is good to do on a regular basis and can be set up to
copy everything or just the files that have changed. The help
on your system for this utility is probably the best place for
information about the use of backup.
