Daylight Saving Time is changing in 2007! No longer the 1st Sunday of April & Last(or 5th) Sunday in October, now the 2nd Sunday of March and the 1st Sunday of November. Grumble, Grumble.

How do I tell my computer that DST changed? Well I have 'patches' for Windows 2000 and Window XP but I am looking for Win9x(95, 98, 98se, or ME) updates as I don't have the time and the computers to work on them. We can post them to the club's website as they become availible.

Here's links to the registry update files for Win2kpro and WinXP:

http://www.mc3computerclub.org/TimeZone/WinXP/TZUpdate_XP.reg

Right click on the proper links and select "Save Link as..." or "Save Target as...", depending on your browser. I suggest you save this to your Desktop as it will be easy to find. Double click on it and Windows will ask if you want to import the file into your computer's registry. Answer yes and that's it.

These registry files will setup Daylight Saving Time for the Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones and set your computer to Central time with DST on. You can of course change your time zone after importing these .reg files.

Why should I go to all this trouble, won't Microsoft just send out a patch for us?

No, Microsoft is not putting out any timezone/DST patches for anyone anywhere in the world. We have to remember the world does not revolve around the US and in the scheme of things when you get down to the details of time around the world, MS could end up with a full time staff tracking time around the world. Did you know that there are three countries in the world
that use DST, but don't have set dates for the change over and each year their federal governments pass legistration setting the dates for the next year? Brazil is the largest of those three.

And what do you do for Australia? This last year, they hosted the British Commonwealth games. They last for two weeks and the changeover date for Australian DST fell in the middle of the games. The Autralian government decided that it would be too confusing to change time in the middle of the games, so they pushed the date for the change date back one week, just for last year.

So, in the end, Microsoft's approach is 'here's the tools to change it with(but you have buy our Resource Kit for that version of Windows to get them) and if you want to pass this to more than one computer, here's the registry keys to export and then import on the others'(which is what these links point to).
